卡迪（罗伯特·米彻姆 Robert Mitchum 饰）是一个作歹多端的无耻忘八,刚停止了十四年监狱生涯的他满头脑只有一件事件,就是去处一位名叫萨姆（格利高里·派克 Gregory Peck 饰）的状师寻仇。本来,在已经的庭审中,萨姆手握这一份对卡迪有利的证据,但是萨姆懂得卡迪罪恶的天性,于是挑选隐蔽了证据,招致卡迪被判了重刑。 卡迪很快就找到了萨姆的居处,他的阴魂不散让萨姆一家人整天生涯在担惊受怕之中,不只如斯,卡迪还每每骚扰卡迪的老婆佩吉（波莉·伯根 Polly Bergen 饰）跟女儿南希（Lori Martin 饰）,忍气吞声的萨姆找了一名打手应付卡迪,但是卡迪太甚强健,打手基本就不是他的敌手。
