玄奘三藏是河里飘来的弃儿，被金山寺的光明三藏法师抚养长大，也因此受尽了寺中僧侣的岐视。师父遇害使他的心灵受到了巨大打击，也由此养成孤僻叛逆的性格。三藏孤傲不羁，追求自由，不愿受到任何束缚，他想找到绝对的坚强和力量来守护自己重要的东西。他使用的武器是升灵枪，绝技为“魔戒天净”。
总是紧跟着三藏的孙悟空是500年前从石头中诞生的奇异生命体，使用与灵活身手十分相配的如意棒作武器。他个性极其单纯，思维方式也简单直接，顽皮而贪吃，但当他除下额头上的妖力制御装置后却会完全失去理智，心中充满破坏与杀戮的欲望，成为极其危险的人物。他惟一不设防并深深依赖的人就是三藏，因为那是抚平他百年孤独的“阳光”。
猪八戒是使用气孔术的高手，性格温柔和蔼，平易可亲。一直面带微笑的他心思缜密，考虑问题细致而全面，总是可以看穿别人的想法。但实际上，八戒与三藏一样同是人类，因为爱人被妖怪摧残而疯狂报复，致使自己也变成了妖怪。永远无法消除的罪与罚是他心上的一道不可弥合的伤口，在那温文的微笑之下，是渴望得到平复的悲伤。
一头红发的沙悟净是妖怪与人类所生的孩子，因此被继母所厌恶。哥哥为了保护他而杀死了自己的母亲，使他认为自己才是真正的凶手而深深自责。从此悟净放浪形骸，成为好色且口无遮拦的浪子，但他仍是个爱打抱不平的豪爽男人。他使用的武器是带有锁链的月牙铲，虽然常与悟空斗嘴，其实还是很为同伴着想的。
这组富有个性的角色引用了中国古典名著《西游记》中人物的名字，但却完全颠覆了原著中的形象，虽然故事背景设在古代，但他们的语言和行为与现代人无异，这使该片充满了后现代色彩。而人与妖相互混杂的四人各有自己内心的伤口，对其心理历程细腻的刻画，把观众带入一个感伤而又不失温情的世界。
